Detailed description of Sanctuary Golf Club at Cat Island, CLOSED 2019

Sanctuary Golf Club at Cat Island, previously named South Carolina National Golf Club, is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Beaufort, South Carolina, north of Broad River.

The course opened in 1985. It is the final course design of renowned golf course designer George W. Cobb. The front nine holes play out through oaks draped with Spanish Moss. The back nine holes play out to striking views of the Port Royal Sound.

The course was purchased out of bankruptcy in 2007 by Owner Richard Grant. The course has been returned to excellent condition. The setting along the river has always been beautiful.

The course closed in 2019

Current owner, Jeff Fischer, who also owns Lady’s Island Country Club on the north end of Lady’s Island, closed the Sanctuary Club abruptly in January 2019 and said at the time that the course was for sale while he consolidated operations to his other club.

Sanctuary at Cat Island is something special with the water flowing in and out of the course as the tide changes. This is target golf at its best and along with the alligators that live in the waters around the course there are plenty of other wildlife to be seen and enjoyed. The clubhouse is excellent along with a great restaurant and pro shop. Staff are cordial and efficient and help make your experience at the Sanctuary course a memorable one.

Would travel: 60-120 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

You can tell this is a good course, but it looks like they haven't spent much money maintaining it recently. The fairways were marginal, and looked liked they hadn't been watered for quite a while. I'll give them a pass on the conditions of the greens because they had just been "punched" and consequently, they were bumpy, sandy, and slow. Still, the layout is nice, and the holes interesting - especially the back nine. We received an "aerification" discount ($35) so, it was worth it for that amount of money. I'd go back, but would hope if I were going to pay full price, the fairways and greens would be in much better condition.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Very challenging but not too difficult. Requires accuracy for a great score; anything less results in a lots of lost balls and a high score
